Hindsight Mondays: Silly Ubisoft, finished games are for playing
Has it been a week already? The start of another 7 days begins today, so why don’t we continue to live in the past for just a little bit longer? Fraser’s out this week, so I’ll be your Captain. Please refrain from standing on your desks, while I regale you all with tales of The Week That Was! Actually, on second thought, totally stand on your desks. I deserve it.
The week of February 4-10th brought us a few highly anticipated video games! EA and Visceral Games released Dead Space 3, a game I’ve watched to completion on our very own STREAMoutof10 Twitch.tv Channel! Shout out to Ricochetguro for sharing the title with us — I gasped and shouted profanities and cried (though I only cried because I bit my tongue from all the gasping and shouting). Sly Cooper returned in Thieves of Time for PS3 and PS Vita and I confess I’ve never actually played any of the series. Maybe I should get around to that? Fire Emblem: Awakening was also launched last week! Sorta. It was plagued with some slight shipping troubles.
Want some old news with your recently released video games?! Well then listen up since I have some! The biggest deal was with Rayman Legends, which saw our limbless hero delayed until September and going multiplatform. The Wii U version, despite being quite finished, is now just sitting somewhere in the bowels of Ubisoft’s headquarters while the game’s developers are understandably upset. I’m personally glad more people (like the lovely Steven Hansen) will get to play what is sure to be a wonderful game, but I can’t help but feel a bit slighted. If it’s done, just give it to me, Ubisoft! I don’t want another “exclusive demo.” That’s just idiotic. Gabe Newell and J.J. Abrams finally came out and told everybody that GLaDOS was working with Ben Linus the whole time! Not really, but they did announce games and movies!
Elsewhere on our humble abode, Liam did a sexy video review of Miasmata for you to watch while listening to his fantastic voice. That accent makes all the Wildlings swoon — especially ones that have been “kissed by fire.” Steven talked about the perils of “just ticking off boxes” and praises the unique, if flawed, games in our industry. With all the talk lately about violence, violent video games and their role in actual real world violence, David stepped up and got real.
On the complete opposite end of the spectrum, Fraser played as a pug and beat up some demonic moose creatures and such in the newly free-to-play MMO, TERA. Pugs, you guys. Pugs! Andy finished the week with a bang, though not by choice. If he had his way, it would have ended with a skritch skritch or something. Whatever the onomatopoeia is for writing things down in a notebook.
This past week I’ve been playing a lot of Fire Emblem: Awakening, in preparation for my first ever AWESOMEoutof10 review! I can say right now that it is fantastic and I’m obsessed with forming relationships between my units. Chrom/Sumia for life, son! I mean, it’s practically the canon pairing. Oh, and there’s also like battles or whatever in the game — it’s a whole thing, I’ll talk about it more later this month. Until then, I’d say pick it up if you were a fan of Advance Wars or Final Fantasy Tactics. Or good games in general, really.
Well folks, I have nothing left to say about anything. I’ve exhausted our time together, here in this makeshift TARDIS. Don’t fret though! There’s a whole ‘nother week out there, just waiting to be recapped next Monday! Until then, enjoy the Week That Is Currently Happening. Go play some games, watch the newest episode of Community, drop by CHAT/10 and meet us back here in a week — I’m sure it’ll be a good one.
