Batman: Arkham Origins revealed to be a game with a silly name
The Arkham series may very well be the best thing to happen to Batman outside of comics since Batman: The Animated Series. Beyond the great combat and solid mechanics, the series is something of a love letter to the Dark Knight and his rogues gallery. We’ve known about the third instalment for quite some time, as it was announced before Arkham City left people’s thoughts, but we’ll soon have some solid information on the latest Batman outing.
Game Informer, which inexplicably continues to get exclusives, has revealed the cover of its May issue, and will shed some light on the appallingly named Batman: Arkham Origins. A few titbits have already been thrown our way, giving us all reasons to salivate until next month.
Origins will, unsurprisingly, take place before the events of Arkham Asylum and Arkham City, with a “young, unrefined” Batman tackling infamous villains for the very first time. Warner Bros. Games Montreal has taken over from Rocksteady, but isn’t trying to tell the actual origins of Batman or Arkham Asylum, even though it is set in his past.
The set up sees eight of the world’s greatest assassins, including Deathstroke, come to Gotham on Christmas Eve with one goal: Kill Batman. I’ve been waiting for a Batman game to be set in Gotham proper since Asylum was first announced, so I’m ecstatic to see that the third title will take place in a living city, rather than a prison.
Setting it during Christmas Eve also seems inspired. It’s the time of year with the longest nights, the coldest weather, and the juxtaposition of joy and families coming together with Bruce’s loneliness and lack of family will hopefully allow the developers to explore the Dark Knight’s more depressing side.
On top of this, a handheld title, Batman: Arkham Origins Blackgate will also be releasing on the same date as the main game, October 25th, and will be an entirely new adventure, taking place after the events of Origins. It’s being developed by Armature Studios, which was created by a group of ex-Metroid Prime developers. Blackgate will be a 2.5D Metroidvania game, and dear god, something has happened in my pants.
