In this industry, few things inspire as much hype and anticipation as the launch of new console hardware. The past few years have seen the emergence of a new generation of handhelds which arrived with a certain amount of fanfare, criticism and enthusiasm, but it simply doesn’t compare.
With the upcoming release of the Wii U, the Eighth Generation is well and truly upon us. I’ve decided to take a trip back to the hours leading up to November 19th, 2006 and the launch of the Nintendo Wii in the United States. So pop open a bottle of champagne, pour yourself a glass and let’s celebrate the future of gaming by reveling in the past.

The year was 1998. It was a beautiful, crisp September day in the lands of Pennsylvania and I was eager to run outside and enjoy the playground during recess. As a 9 year old kid, it was always the greatest time of the day–a whole half hour to play with friends with no books or math in sight! What would I do today? A bit of swinging on the monkey bars? Maybe a spirited game of Red Butt? Box Ball was always a favorite…
I noticed in the past few days a lot of my friends had started playing their GameBoys during recess. I didn’t think much of it at the time, but that day I was quite surprised to find one of my best pals sitting on a bench, staring intently at that monochrome screen I’d come to remember so fondly. Walking over to him, I quickly asked if he wanted to play. He responded simply with, “No. I’m playing Pokémon.”

When I first came up with the idea for this feature, a few titles immediately sprang to mind. After several days of indecision, I bit the bullet and picked one of the biggest games of the Super Nintendo era, Donkey Kong Country. The memories associated with it are rather saccharine, and situated in the earlier stages of my life-long love affair with video games.
